Portal offering up-to-date info on city services launched - The New Indian Express

Hyderabad, June 10, 2000: Thanks to the World Wide Web, the world has become infinitely smaller. One may, with due apologies to Ayn Rand, call it "Atlas Shrunk".

If anything has speeded up the compression of Planet Earth into a global village, it is the Net lining far-off places into a well connected habitation.

For a browser, the Net is as limitless as the human mind and exploring it is like an endless quest. With the mushrooming of websites and portals, 'infotainment' is just a click away for a cross-section of people. For all this profusion of portals, however, there are only a few that deal with local content. And to fill up the lack along comes HamaraShehar.com (a horizontal portal with a host of portals attached) which exclusively addresses the local needs of browsers.

The portal, put online by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday, provides a whole range of information on city services. According to Ardent Citylink Services Pvt Ltd., which hosts the portal, HamaraShehar.com acts as a city guide.

Speaking to City Express, Ardent Citylink Chairman Prasad Bodepudi said the portal offered its services in English and Telugu, Efforts are on to put out the Hindi version in a couple of weeks, he adds.

Funded mostly by the promoters and partly by some individual investors, the portal company is not closing its doors on angel fundings. "We have not given any thought on this subject as of now, since we are comfortably placed. If any VC sees our portal on their own, likes it and finds our management principles congenial we may consider talking to them," says the NRI entrepreneur.

He, however, declined to reveal the amount the company put into this project. "We have decided not to make this information public till we go to funding (if any) or IPO," Prasad says. He maintains that the portal stands out from the rest by offering in-depth quality content, user-friendliness and personalisation.

The portal, which offers updated information on city cinema, bus services, telephone numbers and other essential service, is the first desi portal that has fully integrated e-mail, organizer, notepad and address book, claims Prasad.

The horizontal portal can also be accessed at www.MeraShehar.com, ApnaShehar.com and the local varient ManaPattanam.com.
